The Citadel of Lille, built between 1668 and 1671 at the request of Louis XIV, is a major work by the military engineer and architect Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban. It was part of a military strategy aimed at protecting the kingdom's new borders after the wars of conquest. Vauban, considered one of the greatest military engineers of the time, designed this fortress in response to the evolving art of war, incorporating bastions and ramparts adapted to the modern weapons of the period. Despite losing its military function, the Citadel of Lille remains a prime example of defensive architecture. Its rigorous design and geometric simplicity have influenced many contemporary architects. Today, it stands not only as a testament to Vauban’s genius but also as a historical site and a source of inspiration for modern architectural design. Directed by: Stan Neumann
