The "angel of peace", actually no angel at all in the Christian sense, received its name only later by the vernacular. It was created as a peace monument after a competition design by the sculptors Heinrich Düll, Georg Pezold and Max Heilmeier. The foundation stone was laid on 10 May 1896, the ceremonial unveiling on 16 July 1899. The occasion for the joint work was the twenty-fifth anniversary of the "Frankfurt Peace" after the Franco-German War of 1870/1871. In the late 19th century this victory was glorified nationally. With her right arm stretched out and raised, the angel of peace strives forward on her pedestal, holding an olive branch in her right hand. In the hand of the left, angled arm the angel holds a palladion, an ancient statue of the warlike Athena, standing on a globe. The bronze casting is by Ferdinand von Miller, the figure is gilded with 24 carat gold leaf. Because of the danger of falling the angel was dismantled in 1981 - unfortunately improperly - which made an extensive restoration of the bronze figure necessary. It was not until 1983 that the sculpture could be set up again.
