Epic Bright (PC-9801 Version) Genre: FM-synthesis chiptune cover (PMD98 / Yamaha YM2608 (OPNA)) Original Source: some BeepBox composition now lost to history in its final form; an earlier beta version can be found as https://tinyurl.com/2mvlxhpq Composed by JoelBruno x5 @Joelx5Guy (formerly attributed to Moon, see details below) Arranged by SilSinn9801 (Silent Sinner in Scarlet) This was a request from someone on Discord last year, purportedly for use on some freeware “danmaku”-style shooter game he was developing. He provided me a MIDI sequence file which –according to him– was exported from a BeepBox weblink which I was told was the original source. Very scant details are known about such BeepBox music track: all I was told was that it was composed by someone the requester only identified as “Moon” (no social links about them, though). The PC-98 cover was finished & delivered on October 5, 2020 (practically 13 months ago from this video’s upload timestamp). I can no longer find the original BeepBox URL source on my Discord DMs with the requester because it seems he deleted some of his messages before deleting his account altogether, so for now consider the composition source “lost to history”; also, given I was never provided with Moon’s socials, I have no means of contacting them for filling up the missing info here. Also, I have honestly no clue as to whether the game [this chiptune cover was originally meant for] was ever finished, in development hell, or canceled altogether… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ My thoughts on the original BeepBox composition this cover was sourced from? Well, uh, to be honest, compositionally it didn’t really sound to me like a well-baked, well-meshed musical thing: I was having problems determining which melodies in certain sections were –volume-wise– the leads & which were the backings (maybe Moon as a composer wasn’t very good at properly mixing individual channels on BeepBox? I don’t know, & with no possibility of contacting them I was unable to get their feedback on what was supposed to be lead & what was meant to be acompaniment, etc.), so there was a lot of clashing & competition there. In. The. BeepBox. Original. Sure, testing the BeepBox-exported MIDI with different soundfonts would result in certain parts standing out further than in the original BeepBox sound source, so what might’ve been a backing instrument in the BeepBox original ended up being a lead instrument in the SF2 MIDI render. Thereby, I was faced with a tough choice: whether to respect the BeepBox original’s problematic mixing levels (& thus respect Moon’s presumed original stylistic choices) or to assume instead the different-but-more-pleasing mixing levels from the custom-SF2 MIDI render (even if that went against Moon’s presumed wishes) when writing the MML source code for the chiptune version… If someone ever gets to identify the exact “Moon” who composed this & comes up with their social media (or perhaps their Discord tag) –or, most importantly, finds the original BeepBox URL source–, I would greatly appreciate it so I can update this scarce description. UPDATE 11/8/2021: New information came to my ears about “Moon”: it was not one person, but rather two people who once collaborated together to compose this theme under the entity name “MoonGames / MoonSoft”, with one of those two people being the actual requester & gamedev himself & the other person being a then-friend. (They split & dissolved the joint venture ever since, parting their own ways for reasons I would rather not delve into out of respect for both involved parties.) UPDATE 10/16/2022: Turns out –after I got to talk to the second person above, JoelBruno x5– that the theme was actually only composed by Joelx5 himself (not a collab as originally said by the first person, MoonSoft) as a request by Moon for his fangame under the MoonSoft Games label. I don’t know why the misinformation from Moon’s part (even I learned he credited me under a very different name I never used –Lipthan– when he showed this exact same PMD98 video to his friends), but well anyways, Joelx5 showed me a beta link of the original BeepBox composition, which has now been posted above as the original source even though it was not the exact same version I referenced when I covered this theme in PMD98. Also, the composer credit above was changed to reflect the reality of things & to do justice to the true composer.
