(4 Jul 2014) More of a gag gift or political statement, the E-Njoint emits smoke furiously but contains no marijuana, hash or nicotine - at least for now. Instead, it vaporises a fluid that comes in six fruit flavours. "There are people who say: that's not a joint. Well that's right, it's not a joint: it's an ENJOY-nt" says CEO Menno Contant of E-Njoint BV from his headquarters in Delft, Netherlands. "You don't get high from it, but you can enjoy a smoke." Despite the seemingly innocent nature of the product, E-Njoint is selling thousands of the metal cylinders per day, from stores in six countries as well as from its website. E-cigarette distributor Rutger Cranssen of TGC Trading BV says he's not surprised by the popularity. "The buyers are people who want to make a statement, against the nanny state and strict laws," he says. Marijuana itself "gaining ground worldwide with respect to legalisation," he says, referring to moves to decriminalise the plant in Colorado and Washington state. Esther Croes of the Netherlands' Trimbos Institute, which studies drug abuse, says that there's an ongoing debate about the safety of e-cigarettes, let alone joints. "There is in fact a danger that because of the attraction of tasty cherry or caramel flavours, children think: smoking is actually fun. Let's start," she says . In the Netherlands cannabis is technically illegal, but police don't prosecute people for possession of small amounts. Contant says that they have suggested 18 limit on the product to discourage children from using it, despite the fact that it is totally legal. "This product (Njoint) is 100% legal. There is no any substance in it that is related to cannabis, however we placed on the packaging " under 18" warning. But I must say that was not needed, because we were not oblige to that by the law. You can smoke a Njoint without risk of harm, and that's the fun". The company is developing more daring models: one that will emit a marijuana smell, and one capable of vaporising actual hash oil. Real vaporisers are already available in Amsterdam head shops, but they tend not to flaunt their purpose.
