The Grassmoor Training Centre (also known as the North Derbyshire Area Training Centre) was a major hub for the coal mining industry located near Chesterfield, Derbyshire. It played a critical role in standardizing and centralizing mining education following the nationalization of the UK coal industry. History and Background Origins (1952–1957): In 1952, the National Coal Board (NCB) decided to establish a centralized training facility at the site of the recently closed Grassmoor Colliery. The location was chosen due to its central position in the North Derbyshire coalfield and the availability of usable existing infrastructure, such as pithead baths and a canteen. Official Opening: The center was officially opened on January 11, 1957, at a cost of approximately £77,000. Ernest Jones, then President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), performed a ceremonial opening later that year in October. Purpose and Centralization: It replaced smaller, inadequate training facilities at Williamthorpe and Markham. The center focused on training new entrants (often referred to as "trainee boys") and updating experienced miners on modern mechanized mining technologies. Operational Scale: At its peak, the center trained approximately 400 men every 16 weeks. Modernization and Closure: A new, more modern training facility was opened on the site in 1972. The center eventually ceased operations some personal accounts from former miners suggest training activities may have continued at the site as late as 1987. Key Features Converted Infrastructure: Former colliery buildings were repurposed into classrooms and offices. Notably, a wooden pay office was used as a manager’s office, and a cable shop was converted into a classroom. Underground Training: Disused roadways at the bottom of the original colliery pits were specially converted for hands-on underground training purposes. Social and Community Role: The site was part of the broader Grassmoor Colliery history, which included the first pithead baths in Derbyshire (opened in 1929) and the first canteen to serve full meals during WWII. Current Status Following the closure of the training center, demolition was carried out in 2007. The remediation of the surrounding "dirt tips" and tar lagoons, the area was transformed into Grassmoor Country Park. The park now serves as a recreation site and is a key starting point for the Five Pits Trail, a walking and cycling route connecting former colliery sites.
