We’re back with another e-bike range test. And this time it’s the brand new Specialized Turbo Levo 4 Pro. There are so many new features on the latest Levo eMTB, but the key metrics for the range test are its massive 840Wh side-loading battery, 666 watts peak power and 101Nm torque. So we definitely expected the Levo to go the distance. • Gen 4 Specialized Turbo Levo! More than me... What we weren't expecting was 1,633mm of vertical and 37.51km of blissful singletrack riding. That’s 203m more climbing than the DJI powered Amflow PL Carbon achieved with its 800Wh battery and 850 watts peak power. Granted you’ll have to work harder for it on the Levo, but there's no denying it’s got staying power. • Specialized Turbo Levo gen 4 Vs. Amflow PL... What’s really interesting, though, is that the new Specialized MasterMind T3 display does NOT reduce the power output for the final 10% of battery life. Instead, you get full beans in Turbo mode right up until the battery is 100% drained and the motor conks out. • DJI’s Amflow PL Carbon longterm review – B... That means you have to keep an eye on the display and the battery life indicator if you don’t want to get stranded in the middle of nowhere. But it also impacts the total range. Because if the Specialized automatically dropped into Eco mode for the final 10% of battery life, like most e-bikes, the Turbo Levo 4 would easily have done 1,800m of vertical, not 1,633mm. Which is impressive, right? Granted, you are not going to get those numbers with the sticky Specialized Butcher Grid Gravity T9 downhill tyres that come fitted as standard to all of the new Gen 4 Levos. And the range will be less impressive on the flagship S-Works build, due to the increased 720 watts peak power and 111Nm torque that the big spenders get. But at least you won’t have to work as hard on the fancy S-Works bike. So how does that leave our range test league table looking? 1,633m - Specialized Turbo Levo 4 Pro - Specialized 3.1 motor - 840Wh battery 1,430m - Amflow Pl Carbon - DJI Avinox M1 motor, 800Wh battery 1,215m - Cannondale Moterra SL 1 - Shimano EP801 motor, 601Wh battery 1,202m - Santa Cruz Heckler SL S - Fazua Ride 60 motor, 430Wh battery 955m - Orbea Rise LT M10 - Shimano EP801 motor, 420Wh battery 861m - Whyte ELyte 150 RSX - Bosch Performance Line SX motor, 400Wh battery 844m - Specialized Turbo Levo SL Expert C - Levo SL 1.2 motor, 320Wh battery 811m - Trek Fuel EXe 9.7 - TQ HPR50 motor, 360Wh battery • The best lightweight electric mountain bik... So that puts the new Specialized Turbo Levo 4 straight into pole position. How long it stays there however, remains to be seen. The next bike we’re lining up to range test will have the latest Bosch Performance Line CX motor and an 800Wh battery, so stay tuned for that one.
