As we prepare to load up the car and head east towards Lincoln and, eventually, our beloved southeast Michigan, we take a morning walk at the Wyoming State Capitol Building in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and take ourselves on a tour of the exterior of the building, as well as some of the nearby points of interest in downtown Cheyenne. Commissioned by the Ninth Territorial Assembly of Wyoming in 1886, and completed just in time for Wyoming's admittance as America's forty-fourth state on July 10, 1890, the Wyoming State Capitol has served as the meeting place of Wyoming's Senate and House of Representatives ever since. In 1987, it was designated as a National Historic Landmark due to its significance in the state's history, particularly in hosting conventions which ultimately resulted in the guarantee of suffrage rights for women in the state's constitution. Wyoming was the first state to do so. Wyoming is the least populous state in the United States of America, below both Vermont and Alaska, and is the least densely populated in the nation as well. In terms of area, Wyoming is the tenth largest state. It is bordered by Montana to the north and northwest, South Dakota and Nebraska to the east, Idaho to the west, Utah to the southwest, and Colorado directly to the south. The capital city is Cheyenne, which is also the largest city in the state with a population of 63, 957. While the eastern portion of the state is considered a part of the High Plains, much of the western portion encompasses the Rocky Mountains. Both Grand Teton National Park and much of Yellowstone National Park can be found in the northwest, making tourism a significant part of the state's economy. The governor of Wyoming is Mark Gordon (R), and the state is represented in the United States Senate by John Barrasso (R) and Cynthia Lummis (R), while Wyoming's at-large seat in the House of Representatives is held by Liz Cheney (R).
