Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) was one of the most influential artists of the 17th century and one of the great painters of post-Renaissance Europe. He was the central figure of the Flemish Baroque school of painting and he brought genre painting into a new age of its own. He did this thought a dynamic interdisciplinary approach to his art; combining classical erudition - having been given a humanistic education before initiating his artistic training - with his ability to absorb aesthetic impressions from classical, Renaissance and the contemporary art of his day across Europe.
