I’ve worked with tons of students to help them prepare for their IELTS Exams. In fact, our course 3 Keys IELTS has helped thousands of students get the scores they need on their exam. I have noticed a very real IELTS Speaking Part 1 topic that baffles students, regarding letters and cards. Perhaps this is one example of cultural bias on the exam, because letters and cards are not exchanged in every country. Or, another likely source of confusion, is just that this topic is about forms of communication that aren’t used much today. Regardless, as this is a possible topic on your Speaking test, you must be prepared to answer intelligently. ‘Letters’ refer to the handwritten form of communication which is sent through the mail. ‘Cards’ refer to greeting cards, which you can buy in a shop and give or mail to someone, usually for a special occasion, such as a birthday or anniversary. Sample IELTS Part 1 Questions: How often do you write letters or send cards? Will email replace cards and letters in the future? Watch today’s video a couple times, and note down any interesting vocabulary you hear. For instance, in my second answer, I use the word ‘tangible’. This is a fantastically high-level adjective to describe something you can touch and feel, such as a letter or card. Leave your own answers to today’s questions in the comments section below!
