Mr. Roberts soon finds himself on a thrilling first-class journey from London to Geneva, carrying what he believes is a cryptogram revealing the location of the Romanov crown jewels. Upon arriving, he is instructed to continue to Paris and given passwords and a revolver for protection. On the train to Paris, Roberts encounters a glamorous foreign girl who uses the correct passwords and tells him about Vassilievitch, a dangerous man on their train. She entrusts Roberts with a stocking containing the "jewels" and pleads for his protection. After a night of high tension, Roberts rescues the girl from Vassilievitch, leading to a dramatic escape and chase through Paris. They fly back to England, where they meet Count Paul Stepanyi, who rewards Roberts with a jewel-encrusted order. Roberts is introduced to the “Grand Duchess Olga,” who is, in truth, a woman named Maggie Sayers playing a part. Pyne reveals the truth to Bonnington: the plans were successfully delivered, and the story given to Mr. Roberts was merely a thrilling embellishment. Meanwhile, rival agents in Paris are left blaming each other for their failure. Back home, Roberts receives a £50 cheque from "certain people," satisfied with his unexpected taste of adventure.
