In 1981 Stanton released their last Calibration Standard Series, the 981. The 981 replaced the 881 as their top model with a lower mass stylus assembly with greater tracking ability and an extended frequency response. The 981 also included a low impedance model that Audio Magazine dubbed “Stanton’s Moving Coil Mauler” as it equaled or surpassed the sound and performance of the finest moving coil models. It was insensitive to system capacitance loads and produced an extended (to 50k Hz) flat frequency response when used with a moving coil head amp.
