Microsoft Excel Tutorial - VLOOKUP to the left? Welcome to another episode of the MrExcel podcast, where we dive into all things Excel. In today's episode, we're tackling a common issue that many Excel users face - how to do a VLOOKUP left. Yes, you heard that right, VLOOKUP left. I know, it sounds strange, but trust me, it's a real problem that needs a solution. This tip is a bonus one, between tips 31 and 32, and I have to admit, I feel a little guilty about including it in the book. But here we are, and I promise it will be worth it. As always, you can find all the tips from this book in the "MrExcel XL" playlist, just click the "i" on the top-right hand corner to access the full playlist. So, let's get into it. The scenario is this - the key field is in column E, and we need to look up values in column D. But as we all know, VLOOKUP can only look to the right, not to the left. Wouldn't it be great if we could just use VLOOKUP(A2, "F4", -1)? Unfortunately, that's not possible. But don't worry, we have a solution for you. Introducing INDEX and MATCH - the dynamic duo that can solve this problem. First, we use the MATCH function to find the position of the value we're looking for in the list. Then, we use the INDEX function to retrieve the value from the corresponding row and column. It may sound complicated, but it's actually quite simple. Just follow along with me and you'll see. Now, I know what you're thinking - why not just rearrange the lookup table? Well, that's definitely an option, but sometimes it's not feasible or practical. Plus, knowing how to use INDEX and MATCH is a valuable skill to have in your Excel arsenal. Trust me, it will come in handy in many other situations. I have to admit, most people I come across who use VLOOKUP have never even heard of INDEX and MATCH. But once they learn about it, they never go back. So if you want your spreadsheets to be easy to understand and maintain, consider using INDEX and MATCH instead of VLOOKUP. Now, I have to be honest, out of the 40 tips in this book, this one is not my favorite. But it's still a useful tip to know, and that's why I included it. If you don't like it, you can always skip it or cross it out. But I promise, the rest of the tips in this book are awesome and will make your Excel life so much easier. Before I wrap up, I want to give a shoutout to Bobby Rosenstock from justAJar design press for creating this amazing letterpress poster for us. It's a reminder that "A value to the left is VLOOKUP's Kryptonite!" But don't worry, INDEX and MATCH are here to save the day. And if you want to get your hands on one of these posters, keep an eye out for our special holiday package, which includes the MrExcel playing cards and this poster. That's all for today's episode. I hope you found this tip helpful and will consider using INDEX and MATCH in your future Excel projects.
