Q: Scales are fairly new to me on guitar and even though I can play them across the guitar neck and have begun to memorize them, I still can't find the licks in them. Can you help me by demonstrating how guitar licks can be generated from the notes of a scale? I feel like I'm missing a key component in being able to make licks from scale patterns. Jake C. - Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin USA A: In order to pull out licks from the scale patterns, it is vital that the guitar student take time, and study how to break apart the scale into new shapes that move away from the strict vertical and linear layout of the patterns. By using methods like sequencing the scale (in even simple ways), by skipping over tones, or through using a more horizontal intervallic approach, we can begin to see the scale with a new structure. This different structure will help us to discover licks and melodies from it. In one sense, were actually working through the scale using intervals. And, this is why it is also excellent to study the patterns of arpeggios on the guitar.
