(21 Feb 1999) English/Nat The daughter of late presidential claimant Moshood Abiola has emerged as one of the early winners of Nigeria's legislative elections, independent local radio reports said on Sunday. Early results indicate that the country's political parties have done well in their traditional strongholds. Turnout was low and voting was halted in the Niger River Delta region for security reasons. Results from the elections, marking a major step towards ending the country's 15 year military rule, are not expected until late Sunday. SUGGESTED VOICE-OVER Voting turnout was low on Saturday. It is not clear how many of Nigeria's estimated 50 million registered voters cast ballots. But spot checks by journalists at polling stations across the nation of 110 million confirmed that turnout was as low as 10 to 20 percent in many places, newspapers said. International observers and local newspapers said the turnout was significantly lower than in earlier elections for state and local officials because of confusion, boredom or outright voter apathy. Unofficial results have started filtering through. And according to local independent radio reports, Lola Abiola-Eduwor is among the early winners. SOUNDBITE: (English). And the only thing they want now is self-rule, which is democracy, and I think they heard them, I think they've gotten the message. I think they've heard it loud and clear, and I think that they know they've already overstayed their welcome.
