(17 Feb 2022) Tanger Med Port on Morocco's north coast at the mouth of the Mediterranean is one of Africa's biggest recent economic success stories. Work on the port first began in 2002 and after opening five years later, it has become Africa's busiest port largely thanks to Morocco's trade deals with the EU. African Union leaders and their European Union counterparts are to gather for a summit meeting on Thursday and Friday. With an eye on investment in roads being made by China in recent years, the European Union is touting its ambitions to boost large scale spending on infrastructure, transport, technology and energy into Africa. The talks are also likely to focus on health and COVID-19 actions, as well as joint responses on combating jihadist extremism across Africa. Morocco's recent commercial growth has been aided by its close relations with the European Union. Tanger Med Port is one of the busiest in the Mediterranean and its growth has helped Morocco develop its automotive and aeronautical sectors. Similar port developments will be key in the coming years for Africa, and the Democratic Republic of Congo recently started work on its own major deep water container port after entering into a partnership with Dubai's DP World.
