The Gibson Les Paul Studio was first introduced 'officially' in 1983. There were a few predecessor models such as 'The Paul,' Firebrand, Xr-1 Xr-2 and XR-3, but in '83 the name Studio was finally used. It was originally released in 3 tiers. The Studio, Studio Standard and Studio Custom. Basically, the only difference between the models were the lack of or appearance of binding on the bodies and necks. Those were around for a few years until the Studio Standard and Studio Custom were discontinued. By then, you were essentially in the 90s which is known as the Golden Era for Les Paul Studios. These studios had ebony boards. However, after the ebony stopped, there wasn't anything extra special about a studio. It was just a great playing striped down Les Paul. This is why a new premium level studio was introduced in the late 90s/early 2000s. This was called the Studio Premium Plus. These guitars featured very highly figured 2-piece maple tops and are generally found in nice natural finishes. The one I featured today has a golden molasses / honey finish that really reminds me of the Joe Perry Boneyard Signature Les Paul Standard. Would you rock a Les Paul Studio Premium Plus Top or not?
