Energy Minister Angus Taylor says the government has ruled out subsidies for consumers shifting to hybrid cars and will not tax Australians in a bid to reach an emissions target, as the move to electric vehicles is about “powering choice”. The Morrison government will reportedly encourage businesses to invest in electric cars as a step toward their 26 per cent emissions reduction target by 2030. The move will also be part of the government’s technology over taxation pathway to emissions reduction. Mr Taylor told Sky News providing subsidies to boost consumer uptake of hybrid vehicles is “simply not value for money at the moment”. “If we were to try force people, consumers into electric vehicles tomorrow it would be the equivalent of up to $747 per tonne of carbon we’re abating,” he said. “We can bring down carbon emissions at $630 through the emission reduction fund, so it’s just not value for money”. He pointed out the role of the consumer was also to choose a product that best suited them. “We’re not going to impose any tax on consumers as Labor proposed at the last election. Our focus will very much be on what is right for individual consumers,” he said. “This is a pragmatic approach it’s about technology not taxes.”
