On May 30, 1995, Naughty by Nature released their third studio album, Poverty’s Paradise. It was the group’s final full-length through Tommy Boy Records, after which they recorded through Arista, TVT, and E1. Naughty by Nature joined their New Jersey mentor Queen Latifah at Tommy Boy for their self-titled debut in 1991. The group created massive hits with “O.P.P.,” “Everything’s Gonna Be Alright” and “Hip Hop Hooray.” The album’s biggest single was “Feel Me Flow,” because “hip hop needed another anthem.” The feel good song peaked at No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 3 on Hot Rap Singles. Poverty’s Paradise reached No. 3 on the Billboard 200 chart and No. 1 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. The group used the album to promote new artists Rottin Razkals (featuring Diesel, Treach’s brother), Road Dawgs and Cruddy Click. Chris Webber made a non-rapping appearance on the track “Webber (Skit),” years before the NBA player dropped his own rap album, 2 Much Drama, in 1999. Poverty’s Paradise was certified Gold and in 1996 was the first Grammy winner for the new Best Rap Album category. It was the group’s last hit, but Treach has been cited as a major influence on MCs, particularly Eminem.
