Constructed between 1609 and 1617 during the rule of Ahmed I, it’s an iconic example of Ottoman-era architecture and remains a functioning mosque today. The mosque is known for its six minarets and the blue tiles that adorn its interior walls. It’s part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, a UNESCO World Heritage Site Hagia Sophia, known as Ayasofya in Turkish, is a significant historical and cultural site in Istanbul, Turkey. Originally built as a church in 537 AD, it has served various religious purposes over the centuries. It was an Eastern Orthodox cathedral until 1204, became a Catholic cathedral until 1261, and then returned to being an Orthodox cathedral until 1453. After the Ottoman conquest, it was converted into a mosque and remained so until 1935 when it was secularized and turned into a museum. In 2020, it was reconverted into a mosque. The building is renowned for its massive dome and is considered an epitome of Byzantine architecture, significantly influencing the architectural style of Ottoman mosques. It’s also part of the Historic Areas of Istanbul, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
