During this time, the plant stops growing, may drop its leaves, and requires very little watering to prevent root rot. This period is crucial for allowing the plant to recharge, which leads to better blooming in the spring and summer. Signs of dormancy Yellowing and dropping leaves: This is a natural sign that the plant is preparing for dormancy, especially when combined with colder weather. Cessation of new growth: The plant stops producing new leaves and stems. Reduced or no flowering: Flowering generally stops during the dormant period. Soil stays moist: The plant consumes very little water, and the soil may appear to stay moist for longer periods. Care during dormancy Reduce watering: Stop or drastically reduce watering to prevent root rot. The plant can go dormant in a dry state. Withhold fertilizer: Do not fertilize during dormancy. Provide adequate light: While growth slows, it's still beneficial for the plant to receive as much light as possible. Consider temperature: Protect the plant from frost. While dormant, it can tolerate temperatures just above freezing, but prolonged exposure to temperatures below \(10^{\circ }C\) can cause damage, and temperatures below \(4^{\circ }C\) (\(39^{\circ }F\)) can be fatal. Do not prune aggressively: It is best to avoid heavy pruning during the coldest parts of winter, though light pruning is sometimes done to encourage early spring flowering.
