Pulkit Sharma is a clinical psychologist in Delhi who specializes in depth-oriented psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. In this video, he talks about the history of psychoanalysis in India. Psychoanalysis had a promising start in India with the contribution of Dr. Girindrasekhar Bose who set up the Indian Psychoanalytic Society in 1922. Psychoanalytic training institutes have been set up in Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Delhi. However, over time due to lack of adequate psychoanalytic training and several myths surrounding psychoanalysis the discipline suffered. Several mental health professionals in India are fascinated and try to apply psychoanalytic concepts in their work but suffer due to lack of training. This is a part of a talk given by American Psychoanalyst Alan Roland and Indian Clinical Psychologist Pulkit Sharma at VIMHANS Hospital, Delhi. The title of the talk was 'Transference and Countertransference in Clinical Work.' The talk focused on issues of transference and countertransference in Indian clinical population. Both speakers highlighted that Indian population can gain a lot from psychoanalytic treatment of psychological disorders provided there is adequate training and supervision.
