After arriving in Thailand I came down with an ear infection. Initially I went to the local pharmacist who understood my issue and gave me some some medicine to try. Unfortunately the medicine did not work as I had hoped. About a week later I decided to go to the hospital to get the issue checked out. My friend took me to Thai Nakarin Hospital and the experience was excellent! They have English speaking staff that help you with the in processing then escort you to the division of the hospital that you need to go to. Once there the liaison makes sure the division staff receives you properly. I waited about 10 minutes for the doctor, who also spoke English, and he proceeded to check out my ears. He outlined best practices for self care and wrote me a prescription. When the doctor was finished I was able to go to another section of the hospital and pick up the prescription right then and there. I paid for the whole service in cash which was ฿2100THB. That price is including the doctors fees and the prescriptions. Quite a big difference from what hospitals charge in The United States!! I can’t tell you how thankful I am for being able to receive affordable health care. Currently I am on a fixed income budget, similar to retirement, and I would not be able to take the astronomical charges that hospitals demand in America. Now that I know I can get top quality health care at fair prices, the notion of staying in Thailand is seeming like much more of a warm welcome than ever. My follow up visit two weeks later was much the same as the first. I went straight to the Ear, Eye, Nose and Throat division and checked in. They have open appointments which means you show up between certain times and check in. I waited about 15 minutes for my follow up. The doctor was happy to see me and greeted me with a warm smile. He preformed the checkup and said I was in the clear but to continue the self care we discussed previously. He also offered back up prescriptions in case I had an issue later while traveling. With this positive experience I can’t say enough good things about the healthcare here in Thailand.
