JOHN PSATHAS: Pharoah The Marc Taddei-conducted Orchestra Wellington is joined on the stage of the Michael Fowler Centre by Japanese timpanist superstar Tomomi Nozaki for a rare performance of John Psathas’s ‘Pharoah’. This concerto for timpani and orchestra spans three movements, The Post’s Max Rashbrooke writing, “this was a powerful, brooding work. And as well as being a showcase for Nozaki’s fabulous and varied technique, it seemed to play with themes of grandeur and domination, while hinting, with its restless, propulsive energy, at the fragility of such states of being – something the Pharaohs themselves discovered.” Audio recorded by RNZ Concert.
