Cassis is a 19 week juvenile female Black Flying-Fox who was noticed late one night, hanging in a fake palm on a 4th floor balcony area of an apartment block. The "balcony" is like a long verandah, open to the outside, for light and air, which provides internal access for the residents to their apartments. She was just hanging out, waiting to see if and how she could escape her predicament. Overnight she rattled around the incubator trying to escape; this is good because it means she's feeling well enough to make an escape attempt should the opportunity present itself. She explored every inch of the incubator and wiped her butt on its walls. I brought her downstairs, hung her in the cage to see if she wanted to do a wee, but she preferred trying to climb out of the cage. I gave her some juice which was a great hit, some yoghurt (ditto), and left her to see how she would hang. She's still very passive and anything I put into her mouth usually involves prying her jaws apart first. She consistently refuses to open her mouth to take food but will lick the yoghurt, and has discovered how to operate the dripper bottle and has demolished several bottles (and peed copiously thereafter). This afternoon and evening she's enthusiastically demolishing the dripper bottles of juice but a little less proactive with the fruit offerings. Tonight I physically put some soft pear in her mouth, and whilst she was happy to nom nom it, she wasn't all that enthusiastic about me putting it into her mouth. I covered her cage up and left her to it, and had the pleasure of hearing the dripper bottle being very enthusiastically used, and then the secret guilty stealth of eating the fruit. She's definitely going to be off to Merryn's tomorrow for budding with the others in that aviary; Poli, Chat, Cleo, Eddie, Parry, Waive, Tassel, Sterling and whomever I've forgotten. Yay, it looks like we have a survivor on our hands; KOKO Cassis la Chonk. I think you can probably work out why I called her Cassis; I added La Chonk to her name, given her nice solid weight and body condition. Tolga Bat Hospital takes donations for our batties. Tolga is an awesome place in Far North Queensland, which has charity status. By sending donations to them, they get a percentage (and deserve every cent) and they can allocate money to me for batty expenses without it becoming part of my income stream (which makes tax time difficult). https://tolgabathospital.org/donate/ Mention Megabattie or Meg in the PayPal message box and the money will find its way to me. If no message box appears, please email Jenny to tell her that the money is for me. IMPORTANT: If you pay through the PayPal Giving Fund, can you please email Jenny with the AMOUNT DONATED and the name under which you have donated, OR just forward along the PP receipt. The Giving Fund doesn’t charge any fees (so the bats get more money) but PP doesn’t itemise out the amount, they just send a total every month, and we don’t know if the money is for Tolga or for Megabattie. Here’s Jenny’s email. [email protected]
