Nicholas Brown, MD, FACS, FASMBS, is a board-certified general surgeon with Wichita Surgical Specialists, specializing in bariatric surgery. Watch to learn more about Dr. Brown. “I'm Dr. Nick Brown. I'm a general surgeon with Wichita Surgical Specialists, with a subspecialty in bariatric or weight loss surgery. I grew up here in Wichita. My father was a physician, he was an obstetrician and gynecologist, which he did a lot of surgery with it. And growing up, naturally, I had that background with my dad and always admired what he did, and that was kind of my leeway in the medicine. What I find most rewarding with my job is the ability to see a patient's long-term successes. With weight loss surgery, it is unique in that situation because with most surgeries, you really don't follow up with patients for a long time. You know, taking care of somebody's pain, for instance, if they have problems with their gallbladder, you perform a surgery, you see that their symptoms have been alleviated. That's very rewarding. But I tend to thrive more on the long-term relationships where you really do see the impact that you've made in somebody's life. As far as what I’m most passionate about, I think I’m most passionate about my family, and how that incorporates into patient care as well. I think if you are passionate about your family then you treat people like you would treat your family. Both my wife and I were born and raised in Wichita, so it's been home for both of us for a very long time. We're also fortunate to still have a lot of family around here. Most of what our time is spent with is just spending time with that family and our children. I have two boys and a girl and they're all involved in a million different activities. So, we spend a lot of our time with that. My sons play golf, my daughter plays tennis, my daughter dances. A lot of that time is spent just carting them around to those sort of activities. But my wife and I also enjoy travel. Hopefully we'll be able to do that a little bit more in the future as well too. Being a surgeon can be taxing at times. It is fairly high stress at times. As far as what I would tell a young medical student, I would say pick something you’re excited to get up and go to work to do on a day-to-day basis. No job is perfect. Not every aspect of it is going to be desirable, but if there's something that you truly enjoy doing and are truly passionate enough to put in a lot of hours to be able to do, then that's where you need to be."
