This playlist consists of tracks curated for an as-yet unreleased collection of early 90s queer rock and punk entitled Queercore Explosion! The songs are mostly from 1990-1995, to illustrate the queer punk rock explosion of the early 90s, a time when almost nobody in rock music was openly gay (even the ones you might assume were out were not). Some of this music overlaps with the Riot Grrrl movement of the same time. Listen, enjoy, and learn about a nearly secret underground musical movement that existed before the internet! Sister Double Happiness featured legendary queer lead vocalist Gary Floyd, who was brazenly out in the early 80s with his Austin, Texas hardcore band The Dicks. SDH was a hard rock, bluesy punk band from San Francisco who had recorded for SST, Warner Brothers, and Sub Pop, and in 1993 released the CD Uncut on Dutch East India Records. While not a new band inspired to be out and make queer punk, this track earns its place here. Gary also made solo albums and formed the band Black Kali Ma in the late 90s, and still plays the occasional Dicks reunion show.
