Actor and film writer Saurabh Shukla's full interview with Saurabh Dwivedi, the editor of The Lallantop. In this long engaging chat, Saurabh Shukla talks about his family and childhood. He remembers his cool father and lessons learnt from mother. About the kind of music atmosphere he had in his family, since his father was the head of department of music and fine arts at Delhi University and his mother was a tabla player. The movies that he saw as a child and his most favorite writers Arthur Miller and Mohan Rakesh. He narrates the incident that started his journey as an actor. It was when he got challenged to do a mad character. Saurabh Shukla shares one of the most embarrassing moments of his life when he tried to join National School of Drama repertory and thought his life was over. The story behind the making of Ram Gopal Verma's cult film Satya (1998). Very few people know that even before writing Satya, Shukla wrote an underworld gangster story which was made into a TV serial in 1993 titled Shikast. Shikast was directed by Anubhav Sinha (Mulk, Article 15, Thappad, Tum Bin) and Manoj Bajpayee played the role of a mute bodyguard of a gangster in the show. In this Lallantop conversation, Saurabh Shukla shares various experiences, like doing the role of a transgender in Sudhir Mishra's 2008 film Tera Kya Hoga Johnny; being associated the film script of Sudhir Mishra's dream project Mehrunnisa for a long long time; acting with Guide (1965) fame director Vijay Anand in 1994 DD serial Tehkikaat; working in 1996 Hindi thriller movie Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin directed by Sudhir Mishra where he played the role of a killer; doing Doordarshan tv serial Mulla Nasiruddin featuring Raghubir Yadav in 1990, during the shooting of which he couldn't understand English instructions on set and how he learnt English by practicing in a very funny way; and working with Kamal Hassan in Hey Ram (2000) and later writing his Tamil comedy Mumbai Express (2005) in Hindi. Shukla sheds some light on the process of preparing for the role of Justice Sunderlal Tripathi in the Subhash Kapoor directed Hindi movies Jolly LLB (2013) and Jolly LLB 2 (2017). He says that Justice Tripathi asking for hot tea every morning at the court has a whole lot of back story behind it which we don't see in the film. He also talks about the making of director Shekhar Kapoor's Bandit Queen (1994) and the process of acting in it along with Seema Biswas. Shukla says that he life went through a phase of struggle after working in iconic films like Satya and Bandit Queen. When people stopped recognizing him and roles stopped coming. That is why Shukla credits Barfi (2012) and Jolly LLB (2013) for reviving his movie carrier and making him a household name. His filmography also includes Zakhm (1998), Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar (2000), Nayak (2001), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006), Mithya (2008), Oh My God (2008), Daas Dev (2018), Raid (2018), Bala (2019) and the upcoming Aadhaar (2020) and Abhi To Party Shuru Hui Hai.
