Another 2S brushless mod of a nice model suffering from a lethargic 10mm brushed motor on 1S power. This time it's the beautiful new version of the 400mm micro P-51 by Volantex, now sporting a more scale-accurate 4-blade prop, a clear canopy with a profile pilot and featuring easy to remove hatches to access motor and receiver so no cutting of foam is required anymore to make repairs. DEFINITELY nicer paint too. I'm swapping in an Eflite EFLU4864 DSMX receiver that runs on 2S power. Also installing a micro 7A ESC to use in place of the onboard 5A ESC for a little more current headroom. The motor is a 10mm x 27mm 2-pole brushless inrunner normal used in small ducted fans. 2S power recommended. Shaft size 1.5mm. Part number EFLM30180MDFC A new brass pinion gear (11-tooth, 1.48mm bore, 0.3 mod tooth size) was required for the BL motor to mesh with the stock gear drive. Find them at AliExpress. The plastic frame around the battery compartment had to be shaved a mm or two on the inside lip on both sides in order to squeeze the 2S 200mAh battery pack in. It's a very snug fit, but fit it does. No weight was required to obtain the C/G point I wanted (2mm-3mm behind the spar). Mounted the receiver and ESC well to the back of the fuselage and behind the C/G point helped with counter-balancing the heavier motor. New pushrods were formed from 0.8mm (.032") music wire. Normally I would fly with the more efficient and higher thrust 2-blade props, but with much higher maximum RPM I think the 4-blade might prove ideal. I still recommend the 2-bladers for 1S power use. We'll see how it goes. I hope to get it in the air soon. Happy flying!
