I know what you’re thinking. You have this great schedule of content…how do you make sure you do it? That’s where batching comes in. Switching contexts is a great way to kill productivity. Your brain is working on solving one problem, and then you need to totally switch gears to think about this completely different problem. That’s why meetings are so detrimental to productivity, and why, if you’re anything like me, the longer you can focus on the same task, the faster you’ll complete it. If you want to remain consistent in your content creation, you should batch your content. You pick a day that’s dedicated to just creating podcast content: recording, editing, and prepping. I like to do 4 episodes at a time, mostly because with interviews, anything more than that sees a drop in the quality. My total batching process looks like this: *Thursdays are for recording podcast episodes. My booking link only has Thursdays open (though of course, I’m more flexible if needed). I will also prep episodes for editing. Record the bumpers, put everything in Dropbox, and send it off to my editor (more on that later) *Mondays are for shipping. My editor turns things around pretty quickly, so I will take what he’s edited and add it to WordPress, prep the show notes, make the artwork, and schedule it out using the pre-launch checklist in the workbook. Since Mondays are usually the least productive for me, this is great, low-effort repetitive stuff I can do. You’ll notice I have 2 days – one for recording and one for prep. On Mondays, I’ll also write outlines for solo shows if I need to, then I’ll record on Thursday. Since I’m in the recording context on Thursdays, it’s easy for me to get into a good groove, making the recording process smoother. Your batching process should work for you. If you have a day job, maybe dedicating a full day won’t work for you. Maybe “1 episode per day for 10 days” works better. You still get the queue of content ready, and you’re not burning yourself out. I do recommend having dedicated calendar time for batching content, though. People can’t book me on Mondays because I know it’s the content day. It also helps me plan my week better, knowing what Monday and Thursday look like ahead of time. I want you to pick a day to batch your content. I know it’s likely a several-step process, so here’s what you can do: 1. Look at your calendar for the next few weeks and see if you have any completely open days, with no meetings. Make those your batching days. 2. Once you’re out beyond a few weeks, pick a day that will work for you and block off your calendar on that day. It doesn’t really need to be the full 8, but you should make an effort to say, “I’m not switching contexts that day. It’s all about the podcast.” 3. Keep in mind you don’t need to do this every week if your content plan allows. If you’ve planned 12 weeks and you can have 4 episodes per batch day, take the last day of the month off! It’s good to spend some time not thinking about the podcast too. One more thing: If you are booking guests or meetings in general, I strongly recommend Calendly. It’s flexible and allows you to set scheduling time in a way that works for you. It’s how I confine my podcast interviews to only Thursdays, and one-on-one meetings to specific afternoons or mornings. Action Item: Pick your first few batch days. Put them on your calendar, and share your day and reasoning in a post on the Student Center!
