Nielsen: Aladdin - Incidental Music, Op. 34 (1919): Suite Tivoli Concert Orchestra conducted by Svend Christian Felumb Recorded January 31, 1936 in Copenhagen, Denmark, on Gramophone Company 78-rpm matrices 0CS 313-2, 2CS 314-2, 2CS 315-2, 0CS 316-1, and 2CS 317-1. Issued as HMV X 4676 (10-inch), Z 231 and Z 232 (12-inch). Z 232 also contains, on the other side, the Prelude to Act II of Nielsen's opera "Maskarade", conducted by Johan Hye-Knudsen. This has been uploaded separately. Nielsen's "Aladdin" Suite, as it has been published by the Carl Nielsen Edition, The Royal Library, Copenhagen (available for free download from www.kb.dk/en/nb/dcm/cnu/download.html), is in seven movements: 1. Orientalsk Festmarsch (Oriental Festive March) 2. Aladdins Drøm og Morgentaagernes Dans (Aladdin's Dream and Dance of the Morning Mists) (at 3:17) 3. Hindudans (Hindu Dance) (at 6:20) 4. Kinerserdans (Chinese Dance) (not recorded) 5. Torvet i Ispahan (The Market Place in Ispahan) (at 8:58) 6. Fangerhes Dans (Prisoners' Dance) (not recorded) 7. Negerdans (Negro Dance) (at 12:40) This appears to be the first recording of an orchestral work by Nielsen occupying more than one 78-rpm side. One week before this recording was made, its conductor, Svend Christian Felumb (1898-1972) played oboe and English horn on the famous first recording of Nielsen's Wind Quintet (HMV DB 5200 through DB 5203), which I have also uploaded elsewhere.
