Rochdale turned out in force to witness the town's local fire brigade being put through its paces during a drill at the Alfred Street Fire Station. This rare silent footage filmed in 1901 was captured by Mitchell and Kenyon's camera and certainly attracted the crowds - many seem to have been workers and officials from neighbouring factories. As the horse-drawn steam-powered engines trundle down Alfred Street, the crowd surges into the street and starts to follow on behind. Many pursue the brigade, perhaps to witness the staged ladder climb we see later. Others stay behind, spellbound by the camera. It was on the afternoon of Saturday 10th June 1883 that Rochdale Corporation's new fire station was opened by the Mayor Mr. J. Duckworth. The building cost £4,000 which included the site. The station was located on Alfred Street (a long-gone street that once ran from Smith Street to Baillie Street). The building (which had also been used as a police station and ambulance station) remained there for over ninety years until it was demolished in 1976 to make way for the construction of Rochdale's then-new bus station, multistorey car park and municipal offices infamously nicknamed the 'Black Box'. This film shows the old Fire Station and Alfred Street. The building on the left in the film is Kelsall & Kemp's, and the spectators stood by the side of the street are most likely to have been workers and officials from neighbouring factories there. The building at the top end of the street in this film is Hardman's mill on Baillie Street.
