A small highlight reel I put together showing the front figure four choke in MMA. There are various names for this choke, it is commonly called a “ninja choke”, or a “front naked choke” “no-arm Darce” or a “reverse rear naked”. While terminology varies, the term “Front figure four” describes the choke in the video well, as the opponents head can be in a variety of positions while still in front of you and trapped against the chest. There is a guillotine variation of this choke (not shown in this video) where the opponent’s head is on your side and under your armpit, trapped against the lat - as in a guillotine. Some still use the term ninja choke, or “power guillotine” for this. However, “ninja choke” for both of those doesn’t distinguish the opponent’s head position, and “power guillotine” doesn’t distinguish hand position as there are different forms of power guillotine - such as those used by Cody McKenzie, Jon Jones, and Nate Diaz). For the guillotine variation of this, the term “inside figure four” choke or “figure four guillotine” helps distinguish the head position being trapped against the lat. Regardless of which terminology you use, I believe it helps if a distinction is made as to whether the opponents head is in front of your body and trapped against your chest (as in this video); or whether it’s under your armpit. Due to the difference in the head positioning, these two chokes can have variations in setup and finishing position. Renzo has shown this specific front figure four choke in the video from the standing position (usually defending a single) for many years - long before I’ve ever seen it used in MMA. John Danaher has used the terms “front figure four” and “inside figure four” for many years to distinguish the two.
