The other is the public marriage license. They both result in marriage exactly the same, but the confidential marriage license has some factors that make it much more convenient and also provide privacy to the wedding couple. First off, the confidential marriage license does not require that the wedding couple have any witnesses at their ceremony so it can be a true elopement, and they can have as many witnesses that they’d like but none are necessary. Secondly, it’s the only type that can be issued and delivered to the wedding couple outside of the County Clerk's office. Not every county provides that service, but I am authorized by Los Angeles County to do so, and I can issue a couple’s marriage license no matter where in California they plan to be married. And finally, the reason it is called the confidential marriage license is that, once filed and recorded with the county after a couples wedding day, it doesn't become available to any third parties, only to the wedding couple and anyone they provide that information to.
