Asthma in the Latino population is one of the most prevalent health issues the population is facing. Asthma is a chronic (long-term) condition that affects the airways in the lungs. A person with asthma can experience shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and, in serious cases, death. The prevalence of asthma in the Hispanic population shows that access to health care, air pollution, workplace irritants, living conditions, and family history contribute to the overall increase in the condition. Latino children have a 40% higher risk of being hospitalized or passing away due to asthma. Within the population, Puerto Ricans have a 30% higher chance than any other nationality to have asthma and show serious side effects. With the Latino population expected to rise by 2030 it is necessary to address the root causes of asthma like insurance, access to care, quality of care, and cost of medication.
