My first ride using an autonomous ride-hailing service, Waymo One, in metropolitan Phoenix, Arizona. Filmed from my point of view as a passenger in the back seat. The Waymo One Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid represents a clear and distinct pivot point in the automotive and technology industries. Many great stories begin in the middle (“in medias res” if you will), so this channel will too, and this is the perfect first video to do just that. This vehicle is part of Waymo’s fourth-generation fleet. The plug-in hybrid minivan, from the automaker that invented the minivan, uses a gas engine and electric motors and has no operator in the driver’s seat. I summoned a ride to take me to Walmart to get a phone charger. The distance of the trip was 10.21 miles, took approximately 25 minutes from pick-up to drop-off, and cost $19.13. The Waymo One Pacifica maneuvered residential neighborhoods with parked cars, pedestrians, and speed bumps; and handled roadways, traffic, and parking lots with ease. The vehicle could be a little rough with accelerating and lane-changing at times, but nothing that caused alarm. The experience felt very normal very quickly. Since this ride, Waymo has introduced its fifth-generation vehicle fleet, which uses the Jaguar I-Pace, and has expanded to San Francisco, California. The future is now.
