MUTED began as a response to a diagnosis and grew into a collective work by Michael Gordon, Julia Wolfe, David Lang, and Louis Andriessen (no relation), with crucial roles for Neil Wallace, Floriaan Ganzevoort, and whisperviolin makers Bas Maas and Marcel Wanders. Bas followed the process over the years, documenting from close by in his own direct way. The film is his perspective on that period. For me it’s a look back at the start, when I was still absorbing shocks (like realizing a violin could reach 90 decibels under my ear), and a marker of how much has changed since then. Strange, confronting at times, and useful to revisit while looking ahead. Next steps are now in the works.
