Stretching nearly 24 miles across open water, the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway is one of the longest bridges over water in the world and a lifeline for the New Orleans region. This documentary traces the story of how Louisiana engineers and builders carried a four-lane highway straight across a shallow, wind‑swept lake, linking Metairie on the south shore with Mandeville and the rapidly growing Northshore communities to the north. We look at how the first two‑lane span opened in 1956, followed by a second in 1969, and how those concrete lanes turned rural pine forests into a vast commuter belt for New Orleans. Viewers will see how thousands of pilings were driven into a soft lakebed, how precast segments were lifted from barges to form a continuous roadway, and how the bridge’s low profile and navigation spans were designed to deal with tides, storms, and boat traffic. The Causeway is also a dangerous bridge with a unique psychological challenge. For much of the crossing, drivers cannot see land in any direction. We explore what that does to depth perception, judgment, and nerves, and examine the long record of vehicles leaving the roadway and plunging into Lake Pontchartrain. The film also looks at dense fog operations, convoy driving behind Causeway Police units, wind restrictions, and the procedures used to pull stranded motorists and truckers to safety. Finally, we follow the Causeway through major Gulf Coast hurricanes, from pounding waves and storm surge to ongoing corrosion and maintenance work needed to keep this fragile ribbon of concrete open. At its heart, this is an engineering documentary about risk, dependence, and the people who cross – and care for – one of America’s most unusual highway structures.
