Located just a short walk from the Plaza Mayor, Puerta del Sol is Madrid‘s most famous and central square. Originally the site of one of Madrid’s gates, facing east and adorned with an image of the sun, the square owes its current form to a major renovation work carried out between 1854 and 1860. Madrid’s Plaza Mayor is a symbol of the city and a must-see. This enormous esplanade in the city centre was begun in the 17th century by King Philip III, whose bronze equestrian statue stands in the square. Officially opened in 1620, it is rectangular in shape and lined with pillars and arches. The San Miguel market has a stylish decoration and contains 33 stalls featuring a whole host of delicacies and carefully selected raw ingredients. Located in the heart of the tourist centre of Madrid, this emblematic building is actually a traditional market (the only iron structured market surviving to the present day) which has today been reinvented as a totally modern venue supplying a range of premium food products.
