This is a Low-Cost DIY RasPi-Cam calibrated true to the naked eye. Welcome to MayonStream Lab! This is a continuous, real-time broadcast monitoring Mayon Volcano in Albay, Philippines. COMMUNITY PRIVACY (Ethical Broadcasting) Despite using a high-powered machine vision lens, the camera's field of view is strictly calibrated to frame only the upper slopes and summit of Mayon Volcano. We intentionally exclude all residential areas, houses, and local barangays from the frame to professionally respect and protect the privacy of our fellow Albayanos. VISIBILITY GUIDE (What am I looking at?) Because this is a long-range scientific camera (8.5km away), the view changes constantly: Grey/White Screen: This is not a frozen stream. It means heavy rain, thick clouds, or volcanic ash is blocking the view of the summit. Black Screen: It is nighttime. If there is no crater glow, the screen will be dark. Look for the telemetry text overlay to confirm the stream is live. Soft/Hazy Image: Heat waves and volcanic ash in the air act like a "foggy window," softening the sharpness even when the camera is focused. REAL WEATHER BALLOON DATA & PLUME TRACKING Unlike other streams that use generic weather apps, our telemetry is derived from actual upper-air weather balloons. Data Source: Launched locally by PAGASA (Station 98444 - Legazpi). Data Archive: Courtesy of the @UniversityofWyoming (Department of Atmospheric Science). Our custom system scrapes this raw sounding data to calculate the exact wind direction and temperature at Mayon's Summit Elevation (2462m). During a volcanic event (ash venting or eruption), this live on-screen overlay helps scientists and disaster responders instantly determine the trajectory of the volcanic plume, showing exactly which municipalities are in the path of the ashfall. SCIENTIFIC TIMING (GPS SYNCED) For researchers using this stream for observation, precise timestamping is critical. Our on-screen clock does not rely on standard, lagging internet time. The station is physically hardwired to a local USB GNSS/GPS receiver, synchronizing our video timestamps directly to the atomic clocks aboard the GPS satellite constellation. This precise accuracy is especially crucial for studying aseismic emissions—allowing scientists to perfectly correlate silent visual events (like sudden degassing, passive ash venting, or crater glow) with other instrumental data (infrasound or tiltmeters) even when no localized earthquakes are detected. SYSTEM INFO (Custom Built Project) This is not a standard CCTV. It is a custom engineering project currently running on a ‪@raspberrypi‬ 5. Camera: ‪@Sony‬ IMX415 ELP 4K USB3.0 USB Camera (Starvis Sensor) for low-light sensitivity. Lens: ‪@BaslerAG-Ahrensburg‬ 12MP Professional Machine Vision Lens (Fixed F2.0). Software: A custom Python script that automatically adjusts gain and shutter speed to handle the transition from bright daylight to pitch-black night without crashing. STATUS We are currently broadcasting at a High Bitrate (13,500 kbps). If the stream buffers, please lower your YouTube quality to 1080p. Hardware Limitation: Our custom overclocked Pi 5 is currently operating at maximum capacity. Because it relies on raw CPU power for video compression, you may notice minor pixelation during high-motion events (like heavy wind or fast-moving clouds).
