The bore-stroke ratio was tweaked, resulting in 1993 cc of displacement and an output of 223.9 HP/219.9 ft-lb in stock form. For the 4WD system, the central differential utilized a combination of a viscous coupling and planetary gears or maximum reliability. The Escort RS Cosworth began production in 1992 and gained homologation status the following year when it began competing in the WRC's Group A category. The "Cossie," as fans called it, finished 1-2 in Round 3 of the Portugal Rally before going on to achieve two consecutive victories in Rounds 5 (Tour de Corse) and 6 (Acropolis). It won again in Rounds 11 and 12 (San Remo and Spain), solidifying Ford's reputation as a strong contender on the rally circuit.
