How a Series of Cliffs in New York Resulted from a Mass Extinction

Approximately 200 million years ago, both New York state and New Jersey were the center of volcanic activity on the planet. Numerous large scale volcanic eruptions were ongoing, coating tens of thousands of square miles in a thick layer of lava. These flood basalt eruptions were fed largely by a massive underlying magmatic intrusion which would later solidify. Known as the Palisades, it is in part the result of a mass extinction event, the Triassic Jurassic extinction.
