When people think of Jerusalem’s liberation, they remember Salah al-Din (Saladin) in 1187. But what about the 88 years in between — from the Crusaders’ capture of Jerusalem in 1099 to its liberation? This forgotten period was filled with unsung heroes — scholars, generals, and ordinary believers — who kept the memory of Al-Aqsa alive, rallied communities, and laid the groundwork for Salah al-Din’s eventual victory. 🌟 Key Figures & Struggles Zayn al-Islam al-Harawi: Fled Jerusalem, rallied support in Baghdad, and shamed the caliph in a dramatic public protest. Ibn al-Khashab (Aleppo scholar): Defied corrupt rulers who allied with Crusaders, inspired protests, and motivated armies before key victories like the Battle of Balat (1119). Mawdud (Seljuk general): Won battles against the Crusaders decades before Saladin, paving the way though he was assassinated in Damascus. Ibn al-Asakir & Scholars: Preserved the memory of Al-Aqsa, wrote treatises on jihad, and inspired generations to resist. 📖 The Role of Scholars While rulers were often weak or corrupt, scholars kept the flame alive — preaching, writing, and reminding the ummah that Jerusalem was never to be forgotten. Their words created the spiritual foundation that later gave rise to the Zengids, Nur al-Din, and eventually Salah al-Din. 🏆 The Larger Lesson Change does not happen overnight. Salah al-Din’s success was only possible because of decades of sacrifice, memory, and small victories. Every effort — sermons, books, protests, even small acts of resistance — mattered. ✅ Takeaway Don’t wait for a Saladin. Change comes when ordinary people — scholars, preachers, activists, parents, youth — keep the memory alive, resist injustice, and prepare the way for greater victories. #Saladin #Jerusalem #IslamicHistory #Crusades #AlAqsa #MuslimHeroes #Salahuddin #HistoryLessons #Ummah #IslamicReminder
