Lisbon to Sintra: Key Advice to Avoid Hassles on a Day Trip

A day trip from Lisbon to Sintra begins at the Rossio Square Train Station right in the heart of Lisbon. For a full guide, check out: https://www.jaredsdetours.com/lisbon-... ⏱ Video Timeline ⏱ 00:00 Rossio Square Train to Sintra 00:36 Arriving in Sintra 00:46 Sintra Tourist Bus 01:03 Pena Palace 01:30 Pena Park Gardens 01:39 Sintra Palaces 01:45 Moorish Castle 02:00 Quinta da Regaleira 02:08 Initiation Well / Inverted Tower 02:29 Underground Caves 02:36 Center of Sintra Arriving early at the train station will help you avoid the long line for tickets. Plan to spend a while in line, either for someone at the counter to help you, or for the self-service ticket machines. They’ll usually have someone on staff walking around offering assistance, to keep the long line moving. The cost of a train ticket from Lisbon to Sintra is less than $3. There are only a couple platforms, so it’s easy to find the next train heading to Sintra. The train ride is about 40 minutes. Getting off the train in Sintra seems confusing at first, since you’ll been a big crowd. As you exit, you’ll have options to get up to the castle. The tourist bus, number 434, runs a loop from the train station around to the main sights to see. They run nonstop, but are usually very crowded. For around $12, you can hop-on and hop-off the bus all day. For a quicker ride, you can grab an Uber up to Pena Palace. It really looks like something out of a Disney fairytale, perched on the peak. Don’t hike up. It’s too far and too steep to be enjoyable, even for people like me who enjoy hiking. It's key to purchase tickets ahead of time for Pena Palace. You’ll find long lines at the ticket booth. Full tours might be sold out. If that’s the case, you can still walk around outside and admire the colorful castle. The castle grounds are beautiful to walk through. There are trails through Pena Park, as its known, which provide a nice escape from the crowds. From the top of Pena Palace, you can see all of the other palaces and castles in Sintra. A medieval fortress is on the next peak over. You can walk from Pena Palace to the Moorish Castle, which dates back to the 8th century. It’s about $10 to get inside, to climb the ancient fortress walls, and enjoy the views of the valley below. One of the other palaces to check out is Quinta da Regaleira. It’s known for its elaborate architecture, and expansive lush gardens. The main attraction is the “Initiation Well.” You're likely to find a long line to enter, but it's worth it. You’ll follow the line of people down a spiral staircase, and see why it’s also known as the “Inverted Tower.” The path down the well will lead you behind waterfalls, though a series of underground caves. The crowd thins, and caves are nice and cool especially on a summer day. The town of Sintra itself is a bustling place, full of restaurants and shops to check out. I’d recommend taking a taxi or Uber ride over to the coast, for a much quieter time away from the crowds at Azenhas do Mar, one of the prettiest coastal towns you’ll ever see.
