If visiting Mud Islands, please be mindful of threatened beach-nesting birds in spring and summer, including several tern species that form breeding colonies on the beach. Their nests are scrapes in the sand above the high tide mark, with highly camouflaged eggs that can easily be stepped on. To reduce this risk, boaters are asked to avoid the north-western spit in summer, always walk along the water's edge and stay clear of bird colonies.
