Following the model change from the Audi 80 B1 to the B2 in Europe, the new US version of the Audi 80 rolled into American dealership showrooms a year later in late summer 1979. However, the new export version of the Audi 80 for the US and Canada, christened the Audi 4000, no longer had much in common with the previous concept of the practical and compact Fox. The Audi 4000 was now positioned in the compact sedan segment, i.e., in a similar market segment to its European sister model. Its competitors here were also BMW and, above all, Volvo models, which were popular on the US market in the 1970s and 1980s. Apparently, there were also efforts to offer the new second-generation VW Passat Variant, which shared the technical basis with the Type 81, as the Audi 4000 Station Wagon – at least one photo of such a prototype has survived. However, it is unknown why the idea ultimately failed.
