A Father’s Emotional Homecoming After Tragedy: Renovation + Mets Surprise | George to the Rescue

Five years after George Oliphant and the 'George to the Rescue' team first transformed the Marquino family’s home for their son Danny (   • Home Renovation for Brave Teen with Brain ...  ) the crew returned again...this time to help the family’s devoted husband & father, Larry. Larry, a lifelong athlete and hands-on dad, suffered a catastrophic ski accident in Lake Tahoe on February 26, 2024. The fall caused a C6–C7 spinal cord injury that left him quadriplegic. Though he has regained partial arm and hand function, Larry has no feeling from the chest down. Known for his resilience, Larry has met this new chapter with the same strength that carried his family through Danny’s long recovery from brain cancer. When George learned of Larry’s accident, he made a promise: to bring Larry back home. To bring Larry home safely, George collaborated once again with interior designer Liz Kohart, architect architect John J. Viscardi of JMK Architectural Services, Vinny Muldoon of Vinny Muldoon of Old World Quality Corp, Joe Sivilli of Sivilli Landscape Contracting Corp, Howard J. Tarr of Tarr's Home Improvements Inc., Larry's Design Center, and a full team of returning rescue partners (including Steve Fanuka). Together, they reimagined the Marquino family’s colonial-style house into a warm, accessible space that allows Larry to live independently and comfortably. The renovation began with a full first-floor expansion to accommodate a new accessible suite. Contractors from Gabco Construction aided in the demolition of the back of the house to create a ramp-connected deck and extended kitchen. Sivilli Lanscape helped excavate the yard and lay down footings for the new foundation, Howie's team set up the framing of the new addition & putting the structural header in, and Dormakaba installed sensor-operated doors that allow Larry to enter and exit with the wave of a hand. Inside, Liz designed a stunning kitchen centered on accessibility. Maha Construction installed custom cabinetry with roll-under counters, pull-down shelving, and lowered appliances. MSI Surfaces donated the stone countertops, and Renaissance Marble and Granite fabricated elegant waterfall edges. Pooio Tile created a clean, horizontal backsplash that brightens the space. The new primary suite gives Larry privacy and freedom of movement. The bedroom, which implements touches by Larry's Design Center, features a Philip Jeffries grasscloth accent wall, a low-pile carpet from Designers North, and smart Hunter Douglas roller shades. A Hoyer lift system connects to a spacious bathroom that includes a barrier-free shower with a mosaic floor for traction and Kohler’s Anthem digital controls, allowing Larry to adjust temperature and pressure with ease. Each detail throughout the lovingly renovated space — down to the height of a countertop, swing of a door & light filtering through a window — was crafted intentionally to restore Larry’s dignity & independence. As for the cherry on top? The New York Mets surprised the family with a signed jersey & invited them back to Citi Field for a day together. The Marquinos are huge baseball fans and this trip marked a return to the life they love, as well as a wonderful gesture of community support. Overall, this 'George to the Rescue' episode stands as one of the most personal stories in our show's history. This project honors a family that has faced extraordinary challenges with courage & resilience. For George, Liz, Vinny, Howie, and every vendor and volunteer who contributed, bringing Larry home was more than creating a physically accessible space; it was also about helping to restore a sense of home, hope, and family. While we would have hoped to reunite with the Marquinos under different circumstances, we are grateful for the opportunity to reconnect with Larry and his family & provide him with accessibility features that fit his current needs.
