Kenneth “Tuk” Jacobson will be providing a brief overview of the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Bald and Golden Eagle Management efforts in Arizona. The Bald Eagle Management Program dates back to the 1970s and tracks Arizona’s bald eagle population through Endangered Species Act recovery and beyond. The Golden Eagle Management Program dates back to 2010 and provides a statewide look at Arizona’s more elusive eagle species. Presenter Info: Kenneth “Tuk” Jacobson, Raptor Management Coordinator, Terrestrial Wildlife Branch, Arizona Game And Fish Department Tuk is one of those rare Arizona natives born in Havasu and raised in Yuma. He graduated from the University of Arizona in Tucson with a B.S. in Wildlife and Fisheries Science in 1999. Prior to graduation, Tuk held internships with the Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD), working on fisheries in the white mountains and endangered red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus grahamensis) on Mount Graham. As a volunteer, Tuk participated in numerous AZGFD projects, including habitat assessments, small mammal trapping, electro-shocking, hunter checkpoints, and deer drives. Post-graduation, Tuk has focused on raptor-related research projects. This entailed short-term positions across the United States. Tuk has assisted on studies of the Hawaiian Hawk on the Big Island of Hawaii, bald eagles along the Hudson River in New York, 2 seasons of raptor trapping and tagging migrating raptors in the Manzano Mountains in New Mexico, and red-tailed hawk studies in the El Junque rainforest in Puerto Rico. After these travels and seasonal positions, Tuk settled back in Arizona to join the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s Bald Eagle Management Program in February 2002. Since then, Tuk has helped to grow the Arizona Game and Fish Department’s conservation efforts beyond a singular focus on bald eagles and into a comprehensive Raptor Management Program. Currently, Tuk serves as the Raptor Management Coordinator for the AZGFD.
