My bamboo playlist - • Growing Moso Bamboo From a Single Seed (An... This explains in general how bamboo grows and why buying the tallest growing bamboo could be a worse than buying a shorter variety if you are going for height. To be brief and cover something not entirely addressed in the video...Most giant bamboo variety's (beyond 30ft mature height) are not incredibly cold tolerant. They can grow in cold climates, but due to their lower tolerance to extreme cold dry air, the canes many times do not stay green over winter (in zone 5a/5b or even northern 6). In many cases the leaves will turn brown leaving the cane still alive. The new growth the emerges every year relies on the existing canes and their leaves to produce the energy to grow new larger canes during the growing seasons. If leaves fall off then they cannot collect energy from the sun to put into new larger growth and instead steal energy from the roots to grow new leaves. A fully dead group of canes from over winter would result in new growth being shorter than the existing canes. Buying a more cold tolerant variety with a relatively shorter mature height will potentially grow taller in colder climates than a taller growing variety. However this doesn't mean that the tallest growing bamboo can do well in hot climates either. Very cold tolerant varieties can sometime do poorly in hotter climates. Think of it like trying to keep a polar bear in the tropics or a reptile in the arctic. This is why many clumping bamboo varieties don't do well in places like northeast Ohio USA. They may say they have good cold tolerance, but because the summers are fairly hot and the winters can be very cold, Clumping varieties do very poorly around here. Running bamboo will always do better in colder climates even if a clumping and a running variety's cold tolerance levels are identical on paper.
