Joshua Slocum was the first man ever to sail single-handed around the world. He left Boston in April 1895 and returned in 1898 after sailing around the globe. His achievement is all the more remarkable as he completed the voyage in an old fishing boat called the 'Spray' that he had rebuilt himself. Slocum was born in Nova Scotia but became a naturalised American. He had spent most of his life on sailing ships and became a Captain at an early age. He had owned many ships but the last one he owned, the 'Aquidneck' was wrecked on the shore in Brazil. He built an open boat there called the 'Liberdade' and sailed it back to Boston with his wife and children. He wrote a book about his famous voyage called 'Sailing Alone around the World' which has never been out of print. It is an epic account of courage and adventure. In this video Cormac tells the story of this and many of his other voyages.
