Colony 13 is a Russian prison housing over 2,000 former police officers, customs agents, and prosecutors convicted of corruption, fraud, or murder. Corruption is pervasive in Russia, from small bribes to high-level government scandals. The prison offers decent facilities, compulsory labor, and a military-like structure where former officials still wield authority over other inmates. Inmates like Anatoly Bebeshko, a former traffic officer, express frustration over their low wages and the government’s indifference, which pushed many to accept bribes. While reflecting on their actions, some prisoners feel abandoned by the system, bitter that only lower-level officials like them are punished. Anti-corruption efforts outside the prison continue, but catching and proving guilt is difficult, and corruption has become normalized in society. Ultimately, Colony 13 reflects the growing resentment among minor officials, who feel scapegoated while elites who commit far more serious crimes often evade justice, deepening the sense of inequality.
